チベット文明は、周辺諸地域との歴史的交流を通じて、宗教・儀礼・言語・社会制度などを広く浸透させ、独自の文明圏を築きあげた。本共同研究班では、交流史の諸相に関する研究成果を学際的に集積し、チベット文明の史的展開を多角的に分析して、ユーラシア世界におけるその位置づけの再評価を行なう。7世紀以降、チベット・ヒマラヤ地域は周囲の先行文明の影響を受けつつ、独自の文明を展開させてきた。11～12世紀に仏教を完全に消化して以降、より強固となったチベット文明は周辺文化と交流を繰り返しつつモンゴル～東アジアにその影響力を伸張させた。さらに20世紀半ば以降もその発信力は欧米社会までにも影響を与えている。このような発信力と柔軟性をチベット文明は如何に獲得したのか、また周辺諸文明とどのように相克・調和してきたのか。その具体像を探るべく、多様な視点からチベット文明の諸相と継承を学際的に分析する。
From the 7th century, Tibetan civilization—its unique religions, rituals, languages, and social systems—gradually permeated the neighboring cultural areas via direct communications and trade. Our project compiles the results of interdisciplinary research conducted into intercultural communication among these areas, reviewing and evaluating aspects of the historical development and expansion of Tibetan civilization in the Eurasian sphere. The Tibeto-Himalayan area, while influenced by preceding Asian societies, has developed its own distinct civilization. Tibetan civilization grew stronger after assimilating Buddhism in the 11th through 12th centuries and, as a result of interaction with neighboring cultural areas, it spread through Mongolia to East Asia. Moreover, its influence was significant even in the modern European world of the late 20th century. How did Tibetan civilization maintain such power and flexibility? How did it come into conflict with and then achieve reconciliation with neighboring civilizations? And, how have elements of Tibetan civilization been transmitted into modern society, even after the nation itself ceased to exist? To find answers to such questions, we [shall ]analyze historical aspects and transmission of Tibetan civilization from various academic perspectives.
