本研究班の最大の目的は「歴史的メディア認識論」とでも呼ぶべき新たな学際的研究領域の輪郭を描き出すことである。特に本研究班が目指しているのは、バシュラール以来科学史研究の基礎となっている歴史的認識論を、キットラー以来のドイツ系メディア論と接続することであり、この連携を通してメディア・テクノロジーがいかに知識の保存、表象、運搬の可能性の条件をかたちづくってきたのかを明らかにすることである。この可能性を探究するため、本研究班はまずテレビを取り上げる。テレビは通常「マス」を対象とするメディアとして、カルチュラル・スタディーズや社会学といった分野で研究されてきたが、本研究班はこれとは対照的に、テレビを人間／ポスト人間の知覚・感覚の新たなモードを作り上げるテクノサイエンスという観点から検討する。この歴史において重要な役割を果たした視聴科学」という分野は、60年代以降、生理学・心理学・神経科学・工学にまたがる学際的研究グループを組織し、人間と動物の知覚システムについての基礎科学的研究を行っていた。このような観点からテレビの検討を進めることで、本研究班はメディア論が科学史にとってもつ重要性と、テクノサイエンスがメディアにとってもつ重要性、すなわち歴史的メディア認識論の重要性を示す。
This research group seeks to outline an emerging interdisciplinary field which we call “historical media epistemology.” Specifically, we aim to form a rapport between historical epistemology in the history of science and new media studies since Kittler, using this to build theoretical models and practical tools for understanding how media technologies structure the storage, representation, and transmission of knowledge. In order to do so, the group focuses on on television. As a “mass” medium, television has been studied from the standpoint of cultural studies and sociology. In contrast, our goal is to examine television as a site for the technoscientific construction of new modes of human and posthuman sensory perception. Key to this is the history of the field of “Auditory and VIsual Information Processing” and its research on the perceptual systems of humans and animals through a mixture of physiology, psychology, neuroscience, and engineering. By understanding television as a technoscience of perception, our group demonstrates the deep interconnection between media studies and the history of science.
