芸術を歴史・文化・社会との関連からより多角的に考察する研究は近年活発化しており、たとえば美術の分野においては、作家・作品研究を基本として、さまざまな芸術運動、都市文化や生活文化との関わり、美術市場の変化、パトロンの変遷、文化支援、ジャーナリズムと批評の発達、広告と美術、展示空間の多様化、博物館・美術館活動のひろがり、美術受容者の研究等、多様な方法が試みられている。
本研究会もその一翼を担うものとして、美術を中心に、歴史、文学、映像、デザイン等の分野の研究者にも加わっていただき、広い意味での近代における芸術作品・芸術家と社会の多様な結びつきの一端を明らかにすることをめざす。
基本的には、具体的な作品や資料、あるいは作家や出来事を素材として、社会の中での芸術の諸相を考えたい。場合により研究会の場を美術館や博物館に移し、展示や展覧の場をフィールドとする研究会も行いたいと考えている。
In recent years, there has been a growing amount of research to examine art from a more multifaceted perspective by looking into its connection with history, culture, and the society. For example, while conducting research on artists and artworks is fundamental to the field of art, a variety of other approaches to the subject are also being examined, such as, various art movements, urban and lifestyle culture, the shifts in the art market, changing patrons, cultural support, development of journalism and critiques, advertisement and art, diversification of exhibition spaces, widening activities at museums and art galleries, as well as research on recipients of art.
This joint research project will contribute towards this effort by inviting researchers from other fields catering to art, such as that of history, literature, film, and design to participate in workshops which attempt to clarify, in a broad sense, the various segments of connections that artworks and artists have with our society in the modern age. Essentially, we would like to explore the various aspects of art in the society by examining specific works and materials, or perhaps the artists and events. Depending on the situation, these meetings will be conducted at an art gallery or museum and make the area where displays and exhibits are held as the place of study.
